Made it to Iraq

I am here at Al Asad, arrived 6 days ago, and did my first OR case today (only the 3rd general case since we arrived). No traumas yet, which is good news for our soldiers. Things have really slowed down in all the hospitals over here, which is good although it makes life boring for us. There are K-9 military dogs, and if they require surgery, they get shipped to us too, and we do their anesthesia. Cool, huh? We wear military uniforms, and combat boots into the OR. We must be in full uniform and keep our weapons on at all times, which is also weird to carry guns around a hospital. I am posting some pictures--all of the above were taken in Kuwait (I think you can click on a picture to see it bigger). Iraq is not quite as desolate as Kuwait, but it's a desert. The sand here is so fine--like powdered sugar, and it never packs down. Everywhere you walk, you get a puff of dust following you, and you are always covered in dust. This is the "rainy season" which translates to possibly 3-5 days of light precipitation each month. Its dryer than Utah! It's also hot here, and we have to walk almost a mile to get to the dining facility, if you want to eat. The days are around 85+ degrees, and the nights cool off to the 40's. I have been busy getting settled in my CHU (container housing unit, aka trailer), and doing some in-processing here, and learning the computers, etc. We went through the OR to see all the supplies we have, and where everything is located. We go to the gym everyday, which is another mile walk to get there--the only thing close is the hospital, everything else is about a mile. We are having fun, we laugh alot. There are dance lessons, guitar lessons, karaoke night, and tons of stuff to do, and of course lots of walking. It's definitely a different life here. I will keep you all updated. Thanks again for reading and commenting. love you all........

Hi Baby,
Cool pics, its looks like a desert you're in. LOL Anesthesia on dogs, that sounds awesome! So you are a pistol packin' mama now? I have always known you would come around. Are you taking guitar lessons? so you can come home and teach us a few things. You can join the band and be the only chic in the boy band.

Be SAFE! We LOVE you alot!!!

Ali,
It's cold here today (finally feeling like fall, has been upper 60s) and is around 35. Hope they serve you turkey and such on Thursday. I guess the dogs are soldiers too, but that is very cool. Glad to hear that your spirits are up! We think about you often.
Love amy

You live in a container?! So can we nickname you "Ali Spam"? The pictures are great, make sure you are in some! It sounds like no business is a good thing, so keep up the good work. Isn't all that sand hell on the pedicure? (you'll never live that down you know) Take it easy, and have fun,
Jean and Mark

Hi Ali,
Love the pics of the camels...next camel I see, you had better be on it! Yee-ha Sista! As everyone before me has mentioned, I am glad that "business" is slow. And as a "mom" of 2 dogs, I am glad to hear you are taking care of the four-legged troops--thanks! On a serious note, everyday in class when my students and I recite the Pledge of Allegiance, I think of you! I am proud of you and wish you a speedy, uneventful return.

Ali,
Great pix, but I agree with Jean...Make sure you are in some. That way we know you are safe! Eyebrow waxing in Iraq? You mean to tell me you could get your eyebrows done, but you didn't get a bikini wax? You pussy! Hummm.. a pussy with a gun. Cool! Be safe. I love you! You are always on my mind, but I will really be thinking about you on Thanksgiving Day. Because you are one of the things I am thankful for. You and your lessons on how to be a true girlfriend. XOXO Jen

Thinking of you on Thanksgiving! Wish you were all here, but we'll be thinking of you. Glad you're bored, probably a good thing. Safe is the main thing. Keep up the good spirits

Anesthetizing dogs, eh? Do you do that in the same room that you take care of people? Glad to hear you're doing well. Hope you have a nice Thanksgiving. Miss you.

Sounds like you are doing great. I no you said not to send any more food but I already sent out a package of goodies. Give what you want to the hospital staff and recovering soldiers if you want. No problem for me. All is well in Lost wages. Still trying to sell the house and my espresso truck. enjoy your birthday, stay safe, keep busy and hope you enjoy the books I sent. Love, Hugs and kisses
